Wicklow Rotary Club raised €6,500 through the collection associated with their Christmas Remembrance Tree, which was donated to Wicklow Cancer Support.
Wicklow Rotary Club President, Joe Roberts made the announcement following the weekly meeting of the club. Mary Heaslip and Ann McCarthy on behalf of Wicklow Cancer Support were presented with a cheque for €6,500, and she expressed her appreciation to the people of Wicklow town for their generosity as she stated: “This significant cheque will go a long way towards assisting those in Wicklow who need cancer support and families who are dependent on the services of our organisation”.
Joe expressed his thanks to all the volunteers who assisted in the collection and gave a special thanks to Rotary Club members, Peter Byrne and Michael Connolly, who organised the infrastructure and coordinated the remembrance programme.
In particular Joe made reference to Barry O’Reilly, Wicklow Hire & Sales Ltd, the principal sponsors, and thanked them for their generous financial contribution and ongoing support towards the costs of the event.
The Remembrance tree has become a regular feature of Christmas in Wicklow town and has become an annual focal point where people can remember departed family and friends during the festive season.
First erected in 2007, the Remembrance Tree has a consistent record for raising funds for local charities and to date will have reached €200,000
The Remembrance Tree is one of Wicklow Rotary Club’s fund raising events in the club’s annual programme and supports school projects including the Youth Leadership Competition, The Just 1 Life, project as well as raising funds for other local charities.
Appreciation was also expressed for Wicklow County Council and Smiths Electrical for their significant input.
